There is 17 base strings which is an odd number. Folded in half you'll need 9 base strings but one of the halves will be the leading string

what I normally do, is for this particular situation, cut 9 base strings, fold them in half, make the loop, but use one of them for my leading string, you can cut it off to and use for another bracelet, like a rag rug.
