Predicting needed floss length based on... ratios?

Hi everyone!

So I just made my third bracelet (#9) and I love how the pattern looks, but I ran out of black and white (my b and c colors) way before green (my a). I mean, it's not really big enough to be a bracelet because I had to stop knotting pretty early into it. My question is: should I have known I would need a lot more floss based on something about the pattern, e.g., there are 6 green/a strings and only one b and c, so should I have been able to predict that I'd need a lot more b and c? More importantly, is there some math I can do to more precisely guess how much more I need ahead of time?

For the record, I've just been using the general guideline of about a yard per string. I know more complex patterns probably require longer lengths, but I don't have enough experience to know what variables impact it the most, or by how much. Is it mostly a function of the width of the pattern? Or specific kinds of patterns?

The good news is I'm not super upset about my short bracelet since I'm making it for fun more than function. But any help would be greatly appreciated! 😊

I don't think the width of the pattern has much or any influence.

What matters is the ratio at which you use a string to make knots with and knot onto that string. The red and the blue string for example only make knots but don't get knotted onto (except when there is a knot between blue and red) while the black strings both make knots and get knotted onto. Making a knot with a string takes up more string than when you make a knot onto that string.

It is probably possible to calculate the ratio of knots made with a string and knots knotted onto that string to determine the needed length. I think one of the other mods has a formula for something like that, but I don't remember which one.

@halokiwi Thank you--that makes sense, but I wouldn't have guessed that!

And thanks @2006_Mandy !

I am really bad about making my strings much longer than I need to. I would rather waste the string then end up not being able to complete the bracelet. I save all my excess string through!

@mrs_jordan if you ever run out of string, you can put a new string to make it longer. Here is a tutorial: https://youtu.be/vJopcAcJqiA
