Looking for tips when shopping for embroidery floss online (i.e. Amazon). I’ve come across 2 types and have a very obvious preference for one type. One type of string feels rough and is frustrating to knot with because it unravels itself and gets caught onto other strings when I’m trying to knot. (Prism brand strings does this for me) The other type is smooth and doesn’t really unravel. I hardly have trouble with it getting caught on other strings when knotting. And this is obviously the more desirable one for me. They both claim that they’re 100% cotton, but I’m wondering if there’s any other way to distinguish which is the ~smoother~ type of string from the frustrating rough one. If you have any tips on how to keep the rough ones from fraying and unraveling, that would be helpful too! |

I’m not really sure if there is a way, but I would just suggest trying to pick ones with the best reviews. I’ve tried Lovimag and it works pretty well, but I’ve also heard people say that pllieay is good (I haven’t tried it though, so I’m not sure how it feels when knotting).

O O O I HAVE A TIP!! tie a knot at the end of the string that unravels, or use some cheap clear nail polish!!

I only ever use DMC thread and never have problems with it. Also, it’s SO MUCH cheaper on Walmart.com rather than Amazon 😉

Thanks you all the tips!!! I wanted to share one I just discovered as well. I recently found out about thread conditioner which is usually made up of beeswax. I run my rougher strings through it from end to end before starting a project and it’s been helping so much! If you get too much beeswax on your string, it could make the color a bit dull but it hasn’t been a huge issue for me

I’m a newbie too but I’ve found making a small knot tantrum the end of each string really helps with if it frays or unravels (btw do this before working on the bracelet and only 1 knot)

If you are not able to shop in person to get your materials. Amazon is a great place. I know in the US, making returns to Amazon is super easy, quick and free. Only downside to ordering packs versus individual skeins is you cannot control what colors you get and do not get many duplicates.
