Tie the first leading string to the dowel using a lark's head knot so that one end is the same length as the base strings and use it as the last base string

For the extra string, cut a string that is the same length as the other strings you cut. Split the string in half so it's only half as thick. Tie the string to the dowel using a larks head knot. Use both halves as one string. It will have the same thickness as the others.
