Since you are at the beginning I would just untie all the knots and replace it. There are also tutorials on youtube on how to add a string that you can watch in case you do not want to untie it all.

You can add strings in like you'd do for adding strings into alphas. After you're done with that, you can quickly cut the string off that you're replacing.
