my bracelets are lumpy

Hi everyone. I started making bracelets and am doing fine with chevrons, candystripes or the chevrons with the dots per example. They look really nice and smooth and even. I wanted to challenge myself and am trying more complex paterns. But now they are not nice, they are lumpy! Especially the ones where you need to leave out strings left and right. Is it because I am knotting row by row? (The more complex patterns are to difficult for me to do by segment knotting.) Or is it because I need more practice? Do I need to knot tighter or loser? Any tips? Thanks so much!

I would recommend watching some video totorials by Masha Knots or Alex’s Innovations. I would also recommend tying your knots a little loser. Also, Practice. Practice is going to be the best thing. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your reply. I did watch a lot of video's from both named Youtubers. Lover their content! It is practice I guess... Maybe I should try some more easy bracelets first to get the right tension on my knots.

Of course. You’ll get their one day. Also when you reply to someone you can tag them like this @hellooooo and they will get a notification that you responded. 🙂

Maybe the tightness you pull each knot is uneven. Try to keep the amount/pressure you pull each knot even. I hope this helps!

If it’s alpha try doing the alpha technique

@Milo2dog I am trying to practice this! I have noticed that there is a difference in tightness in forward and backward knots.

@abbythread I am now only making normal bracelets. But I have tried the straight edge technique and this helps a lot!

If you ever go back to making alphas, apart from the straight edges technique you can also try the flat alpha technique

(I think a previous comment was missing that specification)

@halokiwi so the flat alpha technique is only for alpha’s right?

Yes, the flat alpha technique is only for alphas. It's a special way to make colour switches.

I just looked at your bracelets and they are beautiful so I assume you mean your alphas are lumpy? When switching colours you put your leading string under your base strings and knot but if you pull too tight it will raise that part and make it lumpy and uneven on top. If you mean the sides being lumpy then I would suggest learning the straight edge technique. Hope this helps!!

Hi! I’ve been a knotted for more than over 7 years, and have knotted both row by row and by segment knotting. Although practice and knot tension can help with lumpy edges or bracelets not being flat, I found that sometimes it’s not you and it could actually be the pattern itself! If it’s a less repetitive pattern and has different knots in a certain section it can make it look a little more textured due to the knot structure! Hope this helps and happy knotting! 💕

@Camo thank you! I did not try making alpha’s yet. I discovered my normal bracelets are better when I segment knot and I do use the straight edge technique more if I think it helps.
