If you look at photos for #58522, the knotter -- a true artist! -- shows not only the front of the creation but the back,, looking equally neat and manicured. Please help me understand how this is possible.

This is possible by the clean back alpha technique. There is a tutorial in the tutorials section here on BB. I suggest going through it.There's also a few YT videos on it. Just search "clean back alpha technique" and you'll find some helpful ones. |

Hi @vintagegal thank you! I learned the “Clean Back” technique from @mjlgvw on her instagram highlights, but you can also easily find her original tutorial here on BB at the very bottom of her profile page. When making alphas, it’s important to keep the base strings very straight and pulled down tightly when tying knots around them. After each row, use a ruler or credit card to push up the row while pulling down on the base strings to keep your design level and square. The Clean Back requires that you hide all the “floating” strings from the backside in between other knots so they’re hidden. It does take a lot of planning to know when to tuck and when to release each string as it will be needed, so it’s very helpful to print the pattern so you can draw path notes for each color. You may want to start with a simple pattern of only 2 or 3 colors to practice the technique. It gets more difficult and time consuming with more threads and color switches. Good luck! |
