What is the story behind so many "half" patterns?

Why do so many patterns portray half of a picture, as in pattern #105291?

I think people just like them stylistically. An advantage of patterns like these is that they are half the size they would be if they were a full characters. The characters are still recognisable but they are faster to knot and better for the use as bracelets or bookmarks. You could for example also make matching bracelets where each of you has one half of a character or of two characters that go together.

Yeah, halokiwi pretty much nailed it. There are a couple of other reasons as well: a) I'm a beginner so doing just one side is easier, faster, so I get more practice faster and for now I don't have to worry about any unnatural symmetry or posing b) the idea is also that you can create "two halves" with these patterns, e.g. Annika is facing one way, her sister Brietta the other way, same with Nori and Elina as a mermaid, Rapunzel with her 2 outfits, etc. Also you could flip the pattern and combine other characters. Yeah, and as halokiwi said, it's also a personal stylistic preference + There are much fewer knots/stitches (depending on what technique you're using), so they're more beginner-friendly and take less time (which is good if you're a uni student like me). And again, much better for bookmarks (I plan to crosstitch a couple soon) or bracelets. At some point in the future I might make more detailed full versions, but for now I want to get through the Barbie movie lineup (up to Pearl Princess, maybe skipping some of them/adding a few newer ones), so I can knot, crochet or stitch my favourite childhood characters, really fun and nostalgic😊

If you want to make a half pattern a full pattern I take a screen shot and then edit it so I can flip it. That would work to make Friendship key-chains
