Choosing the color of your base strings -- it does matter, doesn't it?

I know that the base-string color doesn't show up in the pattern, but it is often visible at the very start of a bracelet, and can be seen in a tassel or other ending. Do you tend to choose a dull color that won't peek through the occasional loose knot? Or, do you use choose a color you don't particularly like or find exciting, one that you probably wouldn't want to use for a pattern itself? Maybe there are other rationales for choosing. Of course, I am only talking about alphas here!

I mostly pick strings that I have a lot of and a colour that goes along well with the pattern. I usually don't use embroidery floss because I feel like I am wasting it when using it as base strings.

I usually choose a colour where it goes along with the colour scheme of the pattern. And neutral or dull colours if I'm not sure 😊

I either chose colors that are dull indeed so you won't notice them in the looser knots, OR i use base strings that will look prerty at the beginning/endings of the alpha bracelet pattern. Like a combo of different colors that match the background if the pattern, or equally "flashy" or "outspoken" ones! Examples of thise you can find in my photo section on my profile if you are curious to see what i mean. If it doesnt truly matter, it will be dull or the ones i have tons of. No need to overthink base strings, as like 80% you wont see anyway. |

I usually use the colour that I think I won’t need very much of (or if I don’t like the colour). Or you can use your scrap strings

I use DMC craft cord in white, black, and silver. Because it comes in bulk and embroidery thread is too expensive to use for every alpha (for me at least)

I always use colors that I think match well with the alpha pattern itself, mixed with black and/or white. I feel that having just the colors that are in the alpha makes the ties too loud and pull attention away from the pattern itself. So if I have a rainbow pattern, I'd add one string of each color to the base and then the rest either black or white, whatever looks best. However, if the majority of the background is one color, say the sky is the background, I'd use the sky color for the entirety of my base strings too. And I also never use colors I don't like for base strings on bracelets. I think it just makes it look better to have colors I actually love in the ties as well because if you think about it you see them just as much as the pattern if you wear the bracelet all day. But it's also completely up to personal preference. 😊 Another tip is that when you're picking base strings, keep the thickness consistent. Same for picking leading strings. Just to make sure the bracelet doesn't get bumpy or anything. But if you need, base strings can be slightly thicker or thinner than leading strings. I hope this helps 🙂

I try and use the main color of the design, but in a hue I have a lot of, and I mix it with beige, as it goes with everything and I have a lot of it.

I would recommend that you use a color that is the same as the background string, if your design is simple and going with a more neutral like white black grey or tan if its more of a complicated pattern. its also fine to use a color that you have a lot of but sometimes if you dont knot the string on right it could end up with an add little dot of a random color so you should always be careful with that

I appreciate everyone's suggestions! @GenMalucci, I'll look into acquiring some DMC craft cord. I dislike sacrificing embroidery floss whose color I might need later, so I very much like your idea.

Base strings don't matter because you aren't going to be using it's color in the pattern🙂, so you can do any color you like.

I usually use whatever the background color is. Like if it has a black background I would use black base strings! That’s just my personal preference but you can do whatever you want!
