I am new here, and, as you may be able to tell from the photos I have posted, my creations are super-bumpy. I look at some others on this site and am in awe of their smoothness. Any suggestions on how to achieve that? I am aware of the tip for when a new-color thread is used in a pattern, but color changes don't necessarily come often. If anyone has any suggestions, thanks so much in advance.

try the flat alpha technique if you’re not using it. it makes it wayyyy flatter. all try loosening ur knot tension. that helps as well

Masha's "flat alphas" video speeds by the first several rows and it's unclear to me how her knots are so flat!

The flat alpha technique is only used for the colour switches. That's why the part where she makes knots of just one colour is speed up.This is how you make a flat alpha colour switch: - make the last knot of the previous colour like you usually would, but instead of putting the leading string behind the bracelet, you keep it in front - make the first half of the next knot like you usually would - take the old leading string, fold it over the base string you just knotted onto and then fold it behind the bracelet - make the second half of the knot so the old leading string is sandwiched in between the base string and the knot of the new colour Other things to consider when making alphas: - make sure you don't knot too tight and that all your knots have consistent tightness - make sure all leading strings have the same thickness - don't pull the loose leading strings in the back too tight, if you do, they will pull on the bracelet and it will curve, you can release some tension by cutting the loose leading strings in the back |

Masha Knots has good tutorials on the flat alpha technique. If you don't understand her videos try looking up "flat alpha technique friendship bracelets". Alex's innovations is also really helpful for the flat alpha technique. You can also cut the backs of your bracelets. (I do that sometimes)

Btw it took me a long time to learn how to do the flat alpha technique. I watched probably every video there was to learn how to do it. You just have to practice. Start with a small pattern with 2-3 colors first before you move onto a more complicated pattern.

Looking at your pics I *think* what is happening is a problem with how you're forming your knots. Are you trying to do both halves of the knot at once and then tightening? If so you should do each half of the knot: tighten the first half and then tighten the second half. If that isn't the issue my next question would be: Are you holding the string you're knotting onto down straight and then knotting onto it? If I were you I would watch a few videos on the basic knots and maybe a few videos of people knotting (mashaknots, alexinnovations, and MeganMakesCrafts are all great channels to browse) so you can see how others form their knots.

Genki, thanks for taking a look at my photos. You've offered a number of points to consider and I will definitely follow up! Indeed I think I have to look at how I'm making the basic knots, as a starting point.
