Hey! I am brand new to all of this (just made my account) and I was wondering the difference between Alpha and normal patterns. I have been looking at all the different designs on Pinterest and I have been so excited to try! If anyone has any extra advice I will take everything I can get! Thank you so much for reading and have a great day!

hello! welcome to the bracelet community 🙂 the main difference between alphas and normals are the way the knots knot together. in alphas, you have bass strings, and a leading string that knots onto each of the bass strings. when you make the pattern, you go in a straight line. for normals, there are a set number of strings, and you knot them onto each other. this makes segment knotting (a method of knotting) for normal patterns possible. some patterns i'd suggest are for normals, the chevron (#2) and candy stripe (#1). for alphas, i'll let other people suggest, but i'd recommend an alpha pattern with 1-2 colors and less than 5 strings . i hope this helped!

I recommend to watch the following videos. This way you'll know the difference and also know how to read the patterns and knot them.

hi and welcome to the bracelet community!! alpha and normal patterns are incredibly different as the structure of the bracelets themselves is different from each other. Normal patterns work in a diagonal or more classic "macrame" fashion (thats the best wording i can think of though i admit its not very good lol), and alpha patterns are more like printing a picture pixel by pixel horizontally. hope this helps! if you need more detail feel free to let me know : D

The difference between them are alphas you go back and forth and normals you can do segment knot or just do one knot at a time ❤️ ❤️

As a fellow newbie, I think that an obvious difference is that normals tend to be much easier to make, especially if you are using fewer strings. (Although, some of the normals with dozens of strings and closely related colors are indeed extremely difficult to do well.) You usually have a repetition thing going in a normal, which some may find dull after a while. To me, an alpha often presents a greater challenge in that you are creating a picture with thread and it tends take greater attention and care to make sure everything comes out as desired. I see benefits to both sorts of patterns and would love to hear from experienced knotters about why they still may create normals.
