I’m sure they can. I have seen people use toothpicks and safety pins before. Just be careful with the sharp edge.

Yes, skewers and dowels are very similar. the larks head knot works on most round shapes.

Should be fine just be careful not to snap it. I used metal wire most the time.

I have used skewers before, they work but I prefer thicker dowels
