It's it possible?

Hey everyone!

I've been looking at a possible way of making bracelets with open ends. Is it at all possible to make one with the ends open, so they stay flat and frilly? Would it even be possible to accomplish? Or would I be looking at the entire thing falling apart on me? What I'm after is basically a stiff flat ribbon, with short fringed ends. I've looked through videos and haven't found anything that might point to it even being possible. So then I thought to hit up the forums to double check!

Thanks in advance!

When you say short frilly ties, do you mean something like what bsoftball did in her photo of #69661?

That looks like what I'm after. But not with the white threads like that. How is that done, and I assume it could be done with coloured thread in place of the white? Is that a specific style, or does it have a name? This is all really new to me. I'm a guy in my 40s, and looking to take up a new winter hobby 🤣. What I'm actually looking to do, is make myself some hand woven crossover style bow ties in crazy colours and patterns.

You can use colored instead of white thread. I don’t know of a specific name. What I’d do is, after you are done knotting cut the strings to about 1 in. or 2.5 cm.
Then put either clear nail polish or glue on the edges to prevent fraying. Good luck

if what you’re trying to describe is what a rug looks like, then i’d do what @crafter83 recommends. maybe not with the nail polish or glue because that’ll make it sharp.

@Rowsitt yeah, they’d have to be careful. I’m thinking like a little bit of Elmers glue. Only if he cares about it fraying. That’s why I said that

@Rowsitt it’s okay. I usually only use them on keychains and bookmarks because of that

Thanks for the replies. It's been a busy week, being resident babysitter for the 2 and half year old grandson, so I apologize for the late reply. If the ends are tied tight, would fraying be at a minimum? I like how it was mentioned about the rugs! That's kinda what I'm going for. Basically a bookmark. Once it's folded over, in the centre of the bracelet, I can add a small snap with a little embellishment to make it pop, depending on the colours that are used. I've not found any that I've liked, and I just recently saw an episode of the Cosby show with the crossover bow tie, and it brought it to the front of my mind. I've wanted one for years and years, but haven't been able to find any that I like. I'm all about bright colours and catchy patterns, so trying to make one out of a bracelet, makes the most sense!

I just searched up crossover bow ties and I like the idea! It's absolutely doable. A snap closure can easily be added with a simple stitch or crazy glue as well once you're done. There are a lot of tutorials on how to make patterns in general, so you can search up some videos on the different types of friendship bracelet patterns (alpha vs. normal) and then with a bit of practice you can make them to your desired length / size. It will definitely be a hobby to keep you occupied for winter - good luck!! 😄 😄

Awesome! Thanks so much for helping me out! Being resident babysitter for a 2 and a half year old has kept me out of the knife making shop for the last 2 summers, so with something like this, I can even start getting him interested in the hobby!

I recommend Fray check if you're worried about fraying, put it on thinly in a well ventilated place and it shouldn't be too sharp or rough to the touch. There's also fibre fix too in a pinch. Again, do it in well ventilated area.
