I have this great idea to make a scarf using a repeating alpha pattern. However, to make it thick/soft enough to be a scarf I would want to use super-bulky (weight 6) yarn.

I'm concerned that the thickness of the yarn would make the back super gross and it would either look terrible or fall apart with cleaning/use. Also, I think the yarn weight and number of colors (14) would be way to thick to use the "clean back alpha" technique.

Do you guys have tips for keeping alpha backs semi-clean and super-secured, especially with thick thread on projects larger than bracelets?

I sadly don't really have an advice. I was thinking that it would be possible to either knit or crochet it because there are techniques for that where you can make designs like that but I'm not sure how exactly to do that either. I think the scarf might really get too stiff when using the alpha technique.

I think if you make it like a scarf, it will turn out too stiff and probably not very clean since all the yarn will be so big. Instead you could use an alpha pattern but use the tapestry crochet technique, you can find videos on youtube. If you know or you learn how to do single crochet (the most basic stitch) you will be able to do tapestry crochet, it will just be a bit tedious. If you try to do this my advice would be don't use more than three colors because that would make it more difficult to hide them in the stitches.
