I do about 15-20 backward forward knots. It depends how long you want it. There is no set number you have to do. I make it about two and a half inches long.

That depends on which kind of loop you do. If you do a loop and a triangle end afterwards, the loop needs to be big enough for your ties to fit through, but you can of course make it bigger depending on what look you prefer. For a teardrop loop I usually make the same amount of knots for the bow as the knots that make the v shape of the loop.
