Odd number of base strings on an alpha

How do you secure the last base string for an alpha with an odd number of base strings? Do you just tie it around the top part thing, i.e. keychain ring?

Usually I take the end of my first leading string as the extra base string. I just tie the leading string to the keyring or the dowel etc and leave one end the same length as the other base strings.

@halokiwi so, you essentially tie a knot around the rim thing with the end of the base string with the tail of that knot being the same length as the other base strings? I just want to clarify
