So i am doing pattern #15136 as my first ever alpha and i need people to plewse explain w few things after looking at it: - Is that a beigginer friendly pattern - how many base and background strings do i need? and how do you usually let determine that so i don’t struggle every time - what do this —-> and <—- bubbles mean? |

@neeth34 for the ---> and the <--- bubble that means the forward and the backward knots. ---> is forward and <--- is backward. yes I do think this is a good beginner pattern! i would recommend watching a youtube video on how to do alphas first though... so you get the idea. for the base strings...you look at the dimensions of the pattern and look at the first number which in this case 7. so you would do 7 base strings. you don't have to make the base strings very long...it depends on how long you want the actual thing to be. so I recommend for this like 5-6 inches or 12-16 centimeters Hope this helps!! 😊 |

That is a good beginner pattern, but do a few rows of just your background color before starting on the turtle. Getting color changes even on the first couple rows is a more advanced skill that you probably shouldn't try until you're comfortable with basic alphas.

Also, I'd add an extra base string on either side as well so you're not color changing right on the edge. Basically, instead of 7 base strings, do 9 and do the first and last knot of every row in your background color. Color changing on edges can be hard to get right as well. I hope that makes sense. Otherwise #97840 would be a much better beginner pattern to start with.
