To find a good pattern for your first alpha you can set the filters at the top of the patterns page to only show alphas that are under a certain amount of strings and colours (I would recommend under 10 strings and 3 colours). You can also enter keywords if you're are looking for something more specific.

you can filter at the top of the patterns tab, i'd recommend filtering to only alphas, 2-3 colors, and less than 8-10 strings for your first alpha :]
