Is it normal for the final bracelet design to look stretched out/ longer than the design shown on bracelet book or does that mean I need to be making tighter knots? I'm working on my first alpha bracelet ever and the design just looks longer than I expected. Any help?

That can happen, it’s happened to me before but it just depends how hard you pull on your knots or how thick the string is!

This is definitely normal. Making your knots too tight will actually elongate the design more, so after you’ve gotten more used to alphas, I recommend playing around with your knotting tension and seeing if a different knotting tension makes the designs less elongated
