Practice, on of my favorite first patterns is a rag-rug, a different take on an alpha but a way to show you the setup.

For your first alpha, I would suggest trying pattern #232. It is really simple, doesn't have many colors, but has a good amount of switching in a not complex pattern. It really helps to develop your alpha skills. I hope this helps. Happy knotting!!! 😄
