Quick noob question about triangle starts for alphas

Can someone remind me: If I have an odd number of base strings, and I begin the triangle start from the right of the pattern, will my lead string be starting the first row with knots for every individual base string from the left?

Apologies if the question sounds convoluted.

Maybe I should be asking: if I have an odd number kf base strings, will the leading string end a triangle start on the same side it began on, or the opposite?

That depends on the exact number of strings I believe.

If you have 7 strings
7 <-
3 - 1 - 3 ->
2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 <-
1-1-1-1-1-1-1 ->

The first full row goes to the right (that of course also depends on if you do one knot for the first row of the triangle end or three. I like to do one.)

If you have 5 strings
5 <-
2 - 1 - 2 ->
1-1-1-1-1 <-
The first full row goes to the left.

The following rule is true for when you do 1 knot in the first row:

If you take the number of you strings and subtract five and you are then able to divide it by 4, you start from the same side. If that is not the case you start from the opposite side.

Thanks @Rowsitt and @halokiwi. Very helpful for planning my next alpha!

I am extremely new at alphas and usually I like to try and understand things like this, but I’m not even going to try and understand this one.

@Luna4 The math formula @halokiwi suggested really works. It’s all in her last paragraph: Take the number of base strings, minus five, and divide the remainder by four; assuming you start the triangle end with a single knot, then three, and so on—if you get a whole number, the first row will start on the same side you started making the triangle end. If not a whole number, it will start on the opposite side.

I tried it on a few mock ups and found it to be true.
