ok so i tried to learn to make alphas a long time ago with a checkerboard pattern, but it looked terrible and i wasted a ton of string. ever since then i’ve been discouraged to try them again. (i know how to read patterns and i’m pretty good with normals) but one i get back from my trip i’m going to try them again. could you leave any good patterns for my first one, how much string should i use, or any tips in general? thanks, wish me luck lol💗

Alex’s Innovations, Masha Knots, and Kinsey b have really good tutorials covering all that🙂

making rag-rugs or vertical wave bracelets are an easy way to introduce the techniques used for alphas (like base strings, switching colors in a rag rug, etc). Better yet, you can reuse scrap string for rag rugs : )

It's great that you're giving it another try. 👍 #73917 was the first alpha I finished. It's not the most spectecular pattern, but it has only two colours and the colour-areas are quite big, so there aren't that many colour changes to do. I did it with a little thicker yarn (the one that you'd use when you crochet a potholder), which made it a lot easier. At least for me. And yes, it got giant, I never ever will wear it, but it helped me to finally learn how it's done. My first try was the raccoon by sodapop. It's so very cute, but has so many colours and colour changes and details and I messed it up so very much... XD ... In the end, just 2 colours, not too many details and most important, practice practice, practice.

Hi! One thing that ALWAYS messed me up when I started making alphas was the string count. The amount of strings at the top will be one more than you actually need for the base strings because it also includes the leading string. Just make sure to count the base strings in the ACTUAL PATTERN to make sure you have the right amount!

Here are some good beginners patterns:
#95492
#95194
#88295
#76372
#73713
#60359
#57224
#47975 (to make your name or something like that!)

Also another thing to consider is whether you want to use the flat edge technique. This basically makes the edges look a lot straighter and neater, but some people prefer the bumpy look so it's really based on what you prefer! Masha Knots explains this really well in her alpha tutorial, I would definitely watch that before you start!

Good luck and my DMs are always open if you need help!

Maybe you could try to do a keychain or something like that so you don't waste that much string your base strings could be shorter, i usually cut mine around 15-20 cm). If you don't have keyrings and you don't want to make a look you could always just do a ahort bracelet sinnce this is just to get the thechnique right
