For key chains probably about 2 feet, and then when you fold them, they will become 1 foot. And then for bracelets, I recommend cutting 2-4 feet so you have enough string to make the ties🙂

For bracelets, I would recommend an arms length or a arms length and a half. For a keychain, I would try half an arms length or a little longer.

The main thing to keep in mind is that unlike strings in normal patterns, the base strings will not shorten as you make the bracelet/keychain. So you’ll want to make the base strings the same as the length of your finished product, plus extra for ties. For keychains, you can estimate how long the finished product will be by using an alpha you’ve already made to figure out how long each of your rows is, then multiplying that by the number of rows you’ll be knotting. If you’ve never made an alpha before, you can just use .3 as a row length. This is probably an overestimation, but as I’m sure you know, it’s better for the strings to be too long than too short. And just one more thing: remember to cut the base strings for keychains twice as long as you’ll want each actual base string in the pattern to be, because you’ll be folding each cut string to make two base strings.

for alphas, it depends on the tension of your knots. what I do is I measure how many rows are in a cm, then divide it by the # of rows in a pattern to get the actual length of the bracelet. for example, I knot 6 rows for each centimeter, so if I was doing a bracelet with 48 rows, the actual length of the bracelet would be 8 cm. don't cut just that much, because then you won't be able to knot the bracelet towards the end, so always cut 20-25 cm for grip so u can comfortably knot the bracelet. then depending on how I would want to start it there are two options:1) the loop. double that length and then add an extra 20-25 cm for grip 2) just ties. measure out the length of ties you want and then double it and add it to the bracelet length. hope this helps!! ❤️ ❤️ |

For the alpha base strings I usually use 40 cm each, 14 for each of the ties. For all of the alphas I made I used that many and It always worked.

Your base strings only need to be slightly longer than the above recommendations if you plan to incorporate them in a macrame/tapestry style triangle end. I just learned the hard way that I may have underestimated how much string that requires. 😅
