I'm pretty sure what most people do is just tie a string to either end of the dowel. personally, I think it doesnt look great like that, so I would do it differently. I would make my string into a loop and do a big cows hitch (larks head knot) onto the dowel so that it lays behind the wall hanging and makes a loop onto the dowel. hopefully that makes sense. this way, it would be a secure knot, and the wall hanging would cover the knot that ties the loop together. the best example of this I could find is alex innovations video titled "turning a friendship bracelet into a keychain". when she puts the green string onto the keychain, thats how you would put it onto the dowel of the wall hanging. if u need more of an explanation, feel free to message me. hope this helps.

Kinsey b has a video where she demostrates this. However if you just knot a knot on each side of your dowel on the pattern You will have a string to hang it on.
Hope that this has helped you!
Happy knotting!
