How do I add a variation?

I'm brand spanking new to this website and I'm getting a little confused about the variant option. I LOVE that I can tweak and play with the colors and test how they'll look before I have to commit the thread to finding out the hard way! A couple of times, I've wanted to add my colored version as a variation, but I keep getting a warning that I can't submit "because that pattern already exists".

I start by hitting "Add a Variation" on that pattern's page. I get the warning that the pattern that I'm creating a variation of already exists and that I can't submit. But the only button I see beyond the "Save & Test" and "Delete" buttons is "SUBMIT to the site"!

Am I just missing something...?

I've also noticed that even though I've picked the "Add a Variation" option, the pattern number I'm editing in the top left doesn't match the pattern I'm currently on. Am I being taken to a page where the site thinks I'm creating a pattern instead of a variation? Any info would be appreciated!

Hello there, I will try to reply 🙂.
A variation basically is a pattern with the same knot structure, but different colors. There can be other minor changes to a pattern which will still end up being detected as a variation, but that's not important here.
And there's 3 types of 'messages' you can see in the generators:
1. error - cannot save & test, cannot submit
2. critical warning - can save & test, cannot submit
3. warning - can save & test, can submit - these are only informational, some of them can mean the pattern might get declined by admins

So, when you click 'Add a Variation', you're taken to the same page as if creating a new pattern (only the knots are not shown and cannot be edited). First, a critical warning appears telling you that the same pattern with the same colors already exist, but when you change the colors and click 'Save & Test', this will change to a warning, telling you that the same pattern exists on the site, but your can be added as a variation. So if you submit the pattern in this state, it will automatically get submitted as a variation. In fact, if you go to the 'Create patterns' section, and manually enter a pattern that is already on the site, the same thing will happen. It will automatically be recognised as a variation, and you can submit it to the site as a variation. So the only thing that 'Add a Variation' button does, is copying the pattern to your create section so that you can tweak it, and add it as a variation.
The pattern number in the 'Create patterns' section is not important, it is just an identifier of the copy. As I'm thinking we could even remove it from there because it's not important in any way to the user.
Hope this makes sense 🙂.
