max number of colors for a clean back alpha?

i hate the messy back on alphas and am in the middle of a three color clean back alpha. i am curios about the max number of colors that can be used with this method because i really enjoy using it and wonder if it can be applied to all alphas.

I think it mainly depends on how the colours are placed within the pattern. I recommend that you just try how many strings you can "hide" in a knot without it becoming noticeable.

I second what @halokiwi said. Besides that, if a colour appears on the left and on the right (and not in the middle) you could consider using two different strings instead of going back and forth all the time with one string. This gives more room as well.
