how would using a thinner base string than what the leading string is effect an alpha?

I don't think it would affect much but if you don't want to risk it you can always double your base strings and knot onto two strings as one single base string. Most people prefer thicker base strings so it isn't a problem if using two strings makes it thicker than normal. I hope this makes sense

Using thinner base string has the effect that the knots are less wide. They will still have the same height. This means that the proportions will change a little.

I use a thinner crochet thread for my base strings sometimes and I haven’t noticed a massive difference compared to using embroidery floss or craft cord for my base strings.

I only use crochet thread for base strings and it is thicker than normal embroidery floss

Not that I’ve noticed, if you look at my pictures of the butterfly bracelet, hedgehog bracelet and any other bracelet I’ve made where the base strings are an off white colour you can see how they turned out when i used my crochet thread
