so i’ve been making bracelets for almost a year now, and i’ve finally decided to make my first alpha. i found a simple heart one and watched some youtube videos from masha knots to help me understand the patterns. i made a wall hanger (i guess that’s what you call it) and it was going good for a while but when i kept adding in different colors, they started crossing underneath the pattern and my design was puffy. i knew it wasn’t going to be perfect, but how can i keep my other strings from tangling on the backside so it looks clean?

there is a way to do a clean back alpha. is a ton of work tho. but also, have you tried the flat alpha? because that keeps the design from getting super bumpy

flat alpha is a technique. i can find the masha knots video for you. it makes your alphas look way nicer and she also goes into the straight edges technique.

yeah, i did the forward-backward/backward-forward knots on the sides, and they looked nice. i might watch some videos of masha knotting alphas and see what she does with them

@lucass_ that was the video i watched (i forgot that it was called the flat technique) and i also watched how to make better alpha bracelets, and both of them explained that you shouldn’t make super tight knots which is exactly what i was doing, so hopefully i can make a better alpha bracelet😂

I get what you are saying. The strings crossing underneath can be annoying... You should check out Masha's How to make better alphas video. She talks about the same issue and how to solve it in that video, with additional tips as well.
Here it is:

I recommend to not pull the loose strings in the back too tight so they don't pull on the bracelet but you could also just cut the loose strings in the back.

Like the others said the flat alpha technique can be very useful when doing colour switches for avoiding puffy knots. Make sure that when making a knot of a new colour you put the string of the previous colour through that knot. This way the knots are more connected when making colour switches and they don't puff up.

The flat alpha technique is a way of making the colour switches. In the video you watched Masha Knots does the flat alpha technique as well as the straight edges technique. When making a flat alpha colour switch you make the first half of the knot of a new colour normally, then you lay the old string over the base string and make the second half of the knot. This way the old leading string is sandwiched in between the base string and the knot of the new colour.
