I depends on what pattern and how u want it to be but i ussaly do zbout a wingspan length if i want it longer and just a arm if i want it shorter!! Gl hope this helps btw a wjngspan is like both your arms folded out ward!u

For normal patterns, you can look at the very top of the knotting diagram (right above the first row) and count how many strings there are of each color/letter
