HELP: wall hanging with uneven base strings

i’m doing pattern #70044 and i’m using a dowel so the strings have to be in sets of two to put on the dowel except the base strings r uneven! how do i put that last one on?

In case anyone else is wondering about the same thing, there are two methods I can think of:- Tie the first leading string to the dowel using a larks head knot and using the shorter end as the uneven base string - Split one string in half and tie it to the dowel using a larks head knot. Use both halved strings together as the uneven base string |
