You have to basically guess but with experience you'll get better at estimating. The length depends on how many knots you need to do with a certain string. Do you have a certain pattern in mind you want to do? |

If it’s a normal pattern check out this forum topic https://www.braceletbook.com/forum/2_site-app/17800_string-length-calculator/page-5/ |

If it is a normal pattern I usually cut my strings at a wingspan length (Index finger on left hand to Index finger on right hand). For Alphas I usually cut my strings my a bit longer than wingspan length. Hope this Helps!

For normal patterns, you just have to make your best judgement. In general, each string I use is at least a meter long, and if I make a loop, I cut the strings two meters long. If you're doing a loop, make sure the loop colour is 30 cm longer than the rest. If your pattern has a significant amount of one colour, you might want to cut those strings longer. For alphas I have no idea, as I haven't made an alpha yet hehe. |

For an alpha, cut your base strings the length you want your bracelet to be, plus the length of the ties. I like to use alphas I’ve made in the past to measure how long to cut my base strings.

What works best for me is to count or just look at the amount of knots for each string/color then you will know which strings to make longer this helps just so you know which ones to make longer but not really how long to make strings.
