I’ve been trying to work my head around how to fit the straight edges technique into normal pattern #37431, but can’t quite grasp how it would fit—do I just add one extra string on each side of the pattern? This particular pattern doesn’t have identical knots running along the edges, so i’m not sure if it would work just by adding an extra fb knot (on the left) and bf knot (on the right)?!

Ah! 🤕

Yes, in this case you would add an extra string on either side onto which you make bf knots on the left and fb knots on the right.

I have written a tutorial on the straight edges technique if you want to check it out 🙂 https://www.braceletbook.com/tutorials/101_the-straight-edges-technique/

@halokiwi what do i do with rows 11 and 23? They already have bf/fb knots on their edges.

You leave the existing knots how they are.

If you look at all even rows in the pattern you can see that there are strings sticking out at the edge of the pattern. These sticking out bits get transformed into bf knots on the left edge and fb knots on the right. The knots that are written in the pattern are not affected by it.

@halokiwi for the knots left as they are: what happens to the extra string we’ve added? do they just run loose on the side?

No, in the even rows there is a bf knot added on the left and a fb knot on the right. These knots are made onto the added string. You only make knots onto the added string but not with it.

Starting from minute 3 this video explains it pretty well https://youtu.be/YkN7VX0gVfQ

Hi @minutcraft

Also @pattncraft has a video about the straight-edge technique on #34879

You can't just change the existing knots on the edge as it would completely change the pattern and distort the design, so yes... adding a string to each side to make additional knots onto would be the only way. The only time you can simply "convert" existing knots to straight-edge are when knots are made with the same color, like in patterns #53786 or #44085 😊

I would highly recommend to print out the pattern #37431 and draw a straight line on each outside edge, then also draw little circles where each outward point on even-numbered rows meet the straight line, thus creating a 20-string pattern. Then label the circles with "<" bf arrows on the left, and ">" fb arrows on the right. That should help make it less confusing when following the pattern while knotting.

I think it's very helpful to always print the pattern I'm working on so I can take other notes as well, like string length, colors used, or even sketching outlines where a triangle or teardrop start could be, or segment-knotting sections.

Thanks, @sodapop. I'll check the video out ASAP. While I have you here: I love your patterns! I think they make up a huge chunk in my to-do list. 😄

This pattern doesn't need straight edges technique because it doesn't naturally curve, but if you are adding it in because you like how it makes the edges look then you would add in one string on each side and when there's a string on the edge sticking out you would use that string to know tonto your extra strings. Sorry if it's a bit confusing! I don't really know how to explain it.

@KuteKat Thanks. Yeah, I was hoping to achieve more level edges. The one I made had this rocky-edge appearance.

hi! you can add the straight edges technique to a pattern that does have bf/fb knots at the edges, you just leave those knots how they are.
