Completely new to friendship bracelet making how do you read a pattern?

There are two types of friendship bracelets. One is Alpha, which uses 2 types of knots and you can use text/images in your design. The second is Normal, which uses 4 types of knots. I recommend looking at some videos on YouTube. Videos are little easier to understand than describing with just words. Hi craftymell! I usually read patterns as follows, whichever sid e the arrow is pointing to you put the end over so it is on that side so it makes a four shape then take your end and pull it through the triangle part to create 1/2 of a knot(you repeat this twice for each k not) also, this might only work for normals as I have never done and alpha.Good Luck!
