Maybe try going on the website? If you’re online there will be an “add a variation” button

there is no way to add a variation of a pattern on the app, unfortunately. you’ll have to be on the website in order to do that.

I like the website better than the app because you can make patterns, variations and go to forum. The app doesn't have any of those features as far as I know.

The website you can open on a phone and use it to make patterns, it is much easier on a tablet or computer though
