It is called a wooden dowel. You can find it in craft stores.

Oh I’m sorry I just reclicked this and I realized you were asking what you put the strings on, not how you put the strings on, so sorry for the irrelevant response. I use wooden dowels, but I’ve seen people use popsicle sticks, cake pop sticks, toothpicks, logs/branches/sticks from outside.

i use wooden dowels that i bought at michaels. masha knots just posted a tutorial on her youtube channel for wall hangings so if you want to know how to attach them to the dowel and stuff you can check that out.

I normally put the strings on a wooden dowel and attach them using a larks head knot. U can probably find tutorials for the knot on YouTube if you need to.
