It depends on how many rows you want to do, how much space your specific rows take up, and what type of start and end you want to do. The short answer is that the base strings should be the length of the bookmark itself, plus the length you’ll need for the start and end. Here’s the long answer: Because everyone ties their knots slightly differently, everyone’s rows take up a different amount of space. For example, each of my rows is around .18cm long, but it’s very possible that yours are shorter or longer. You can get your row length by measuring how long 10 rows on one of your previously-made alphas are, then dividing that number by 10 (this will give you a more accurate estimate than trying to measure just one row). Once you have your row length, multiply that by the amount of rows you want to do (including any triangle ends) and then you’ll have an estimation of how long the bookmark itself will be. Then estimate the amount of string you’ll need for the ties, and add that amount to the length of the bookmark itself, and that’s how long your base strings should be! I recommend making them around 10-20cm longer than this overall estimate just in case, but it’s not necessary. Here’s the overall formula I recommend: Base string length in cm = nr + s + e + 20 n = the number of rows you’ll be knotting r = your specific row length in cm s = the estimated amount of string you’ll need for the start in cm e = the estimated amount of string you’ll need for the end in cm Sorry this ended up being really long, let me know if you have questions or if anything is unclear! |

You could do 2 wing span lengths (arm to arm I should know I've been making bracletts for 5 years).

If you’re making this as a bookmark I don’t think you’ll need the usual 10-15cm for the ties so I would recommend around 50-60cm of string so that you have enough to make the bracelet and have some grip. You can always do a but extra just in case you think you wont have enough. You definitely don’t need two wingspans. A wingspan is usually around a merger and two meters of string for base strings of an alpha of that size would be ludicrous and a massive waste of string. A good start for bookmarks is using a larks head knot to tie your base strings to another piece of string so that you have a flat start. In that case you would half your base strings and double the length of them because they’ll be folded in half.
