With segment knotting you don’t knot row by row. The whole point is to knot in segments hence the name. With segment knotting you can make multiple knots in a row without having to switch strings and you can remember the pattern more easily. There’s a tutorial on braceletbook that’s very helpful if you haven’t read it yet it should help you better understand.

When knotting row by row you knot the pattern like you would read a book: row by row and each row is knotted from the left and the right (you could also knot from the right to the left of course).
You group the strings in groups of two like this:
2 - 2 - 2 - 2
and then you make the knots between the groups according to the pattern
for the next row you leave the strings at the edge out like this:
1 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1
and make the knots between the groups according to the pattern

When segment knotting you knot in diagonals as much as possible. For example when knotting the candystripe you always take the left most string and make f knots with it until the string is on the right side. For the chevron you take the out most strings and knot with them towards the middle.
