Hello! So, I’m not entirely new to knotting, but I am brand new to alpha patterns. I have started out by using the Masha Knots flat alpha tutorial and other advice I’ve found throughout the forum, and I secure my strings using a clipboard.
My question is: how do I keep my edges straight? I’ve tried knotting the same pattern twice, and it comes out looking hourglass-esque each time (although the second try was better).

Have you tried the straight edge technic? That really helps, Masha has a tutorial on her channel. Also make sure the border of your alpha has two of the same color. For example, if you begin on the left side and knot 2 blue knots and then a red knot it will come out better if you knot just 1 blue knot then a red knot.

@Jdog12525 I have been also using the straight edge technique, and the pattern I was attempting has multiple knots of the same color on the edges, as well. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.🥺

What’s the pattern number? And could you take a picture of the bracelet and post if as your pfp so I can take a look? I think the reason why it looks wonky is because it has multiple color switches at the edges.

Maybe it's your tension! With my first alphas, that would happen too because I would tie some knots too tightly and others too loosely, and that resulted in the width of the bracelets being super uneven all over.

@Jdog12525 The pattern number is 73488, and I changed my picture to my two attempts.

@niqerzo That is absolutely possible, as well. Sometimes I go over knots and make them tighter out of fear they’ll be too loose, with the color change.

Oh wow! I can see the improvement in the second attempt! I think if you continue practising you'll definitely improve 😄 And maybe even practising with thinner alphas might help a tonnn ❤️

@niqerzo Thank you! I do plan to try a more bracelet sized one, thickness wise. I’m hoping it will get better with practice. I just felt like I was doing something incorrectly.

They look really good for a beginner alpha maker! Like @niqerzo said, I think you should change your knot tension. For the knots that have a color change, make them tighter that those that don’t have a change.

What I suggest is practice alphas that have only two colors to get the hang of your knot tension and color switches. Here are some popular 2-colored alphas: https://www.braceletbook.com/patterns/?type=a&order-by=loves&colors-from=2&colors-to=2
