To make an alpha, you first need to cut your base strings. They should be the length of your wrist plus extra for the ties. To know how many base strings you need, you look at the top of the pattern and cut one less than the actual number. So, if it says 13 strings, cut 12 instead. Then, you’re going to take the first color you need and make a forward knot over the first base string. When you reach the point where there’s a new color, make half of a knot (one knot), then put your old color on top and make the second part of your knot. You’re basically going to want to weave it through. When you reach the end, make a bf/fb knot to end the row, then make another fb/bf knot to start the new row. If there’s a color switch on the edge, don’t weave your old color through. I’m really sorry that this wasn’t very descriptive, but it’s definitely more of a visual thing than it is a written thing. When I first watched an alpha tutorial, I didn’t understand it either, but then one day, I just sat down and watched the entire tutorial and made an alpha after. I would suggest starting with a rag rug as your first alpha because it’s pretty easy and there are tutorials on it as well.

The reason you cut 12 strings instead of 13 is because the 13th string is the leading string, which is the color you’re going to be using to knot, so you only need 12. As for a tutorial, you already mentioned the one that I watched, but here’s a name bracelet by Kinsey B that’s a pretty simple alpha and you may be able to follow it. I’ve made 2 of them in the past and they’re not very hard. Here’s the link https://youtu.be/N2xlji7d5Lk

The reason you cut 12 strings instead of 13 is because in all alpha bracelet patterns they add one extra string because it is including the leading string you use to make knots onto the base strings that you cut (FYI the base strings are the 12 strings, in this situation)

You really hard to explain it in words but if someone can show you that would be awesome. If you have any friends that you know in person you could facetime and she/he could teach you but hear are some videos that may help 😄

I personally started getting the hang of alphas with Marsha Knots “Flat Alpha Tutorial”. It’s has a lot of good information and I think the flat alpha technique is way easier and it looks way better! I had to watch it a few times to get it, but she has really great tutorials, so I would recommend her tutorials.😁
