If you've already made an Alpha I'd recommend measuring it so you know how big your knots are. For example, hold a ruler up to an alpha and find a mark on the ruler like 1 inch. Then count how many knots are in between the top of the ruler and the mark you picked. Say it's 10 knots. Then you'd know that for every 10 knots you need an inch of base string and then you could simply multiply it until you got to the number of knots you needed. Sorry if this is confusing. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Here are some tips about the alpha base strings length :

- the longer alpha I made was #69685 (45 lines) and it measures 6.5 cm (to give you an idea about the lenght) but as @Emakes said, it depends of each person and I know I knot pretty tight so count about 8 cm for 50 lines.

- I know you don't want to have a big excess but it will be easier to have long strings : if you knot your last few lines on short strings it will be very hard. I always add 10 cm to my base strings.

According these 2 first things, I think you should cut about 18 cm strings.

Here is a last tips for tight budgets : I purchased 2 big balls of coton string (one white, one black) that I use only for my base strings ! It's very cheap and I think you can find this on amazon. (Here is a link to a french website where I bought mine, so you can see : https://www.cultura.com/coton-cable-5-blanc-coton-cable-5-blanc-8023677007044.html)

I hope I helped you 😊
(Sorry for my bad english, I hope you understood every things)
