if you’re talking about the arrows on patterns, then there are four possibilities: forward knots, backward knots, forward-backward knots, and backward-forward knots. you can find videos explaining the basic knots on youtube, i recommend checking out masha knots videos (it’s just the one i personally learned from lol)

Ok so watch the video the person above suggested but the arrows r pretty simpleAn arrow pointing to the right is a forward knot An arrow pointing to the left is a backward knot An arrow going half to the right and half to the left is a forward backward knot An arrow going half to the left and half to the right is a backward forward knot |

There are four knot types in friendship bracelets:forwards knot ↘ (f) backwards knot ↙ (b) forwards backwards knot ↩ (fb) backwards forwards knot ↪ (bf) All knots consist of two halves. For the f knot you take the left string and knot with it over the right string two times to the right. For the b knot you take the string on the right and knot with it over the left string two times to the left For the fb knot you take the left string and knot with it over the right string one time to the right and one time to the left. For the bf knot you take the string on the right and knot with it over the left string one time to the left and one time to the right. |

everyone already explained the arrows but what i like to do is print out the pattern and at the bottom of the pattern i like to write a reminder of which knot is which! even though i’m pretty good at understanding the arrows now it can still be very helpful!

I know, I had a hard time when I first started to read patterns..straight down to the right corner- forward knot straight down to the left corner - backward knot halfway to the right then turns to the left - forward/backward halfway left then turns to the right - backward/forward |

anyone know what the arrows going directly left or right mean? (pointing straight horizontal like, -> or <-)?

@zzzzm0p If you mean the arrows on alpha patterns, those are forward and backward knots. If you're just starting to make bracelets, I recommend making normal patterns before you start on alphas 🙂

One way I remember it is that in English, we read right to left. An arrow pointing right is going forward because that's how we read. An arrow pointing left is going backwards because that's backwards from how we read. Maybe that will help someone.

I think you don't even really need to remember the names of the knots 🤷♀️ @innhdahh An arrow pointing towards the right is a knot where you take the left string and make a knot with it towards the right. An arrow pointing towards the left is a knot where you take the right string and make a knot with it towards the left. The arrow always shows you in which direction you need to knot and where the arrow starts shows you which string to knot with. |
