How do I make my first pattern? Is it easiest on the computer? And how do I understand how to make it?

hi - i think it’s easier to do it on a computer since the screen is bigger and you have more control on a computer than a phone. i’ve never tried to do it on a tablet or ipad but i think that could work really well. do you know how to find ‘create pattern’

i don’t know how you do normals so hopefully someone else can help with that but to male alphas you go on create patterns- create alpha- there are a few different options from there. you can choose to draw, make one from an image, and i think make one from a font (i can’t remember off the top of my head so i hope they’re right). if you want to draw one then you’ll see the little colour box. you can select from there the colour you want to use and just tap to fill in the boxes(it’ll look like a grid) to change the length and width of the pattern just click on the plus and minus symbols. to do from image, just click choose image and do so, then select a max width and height and give it a go by clicking save and test

yes you need to do it on a computer on the website. log into your account on the site and hover your arrow over your user name and profile picture. a drop down menu should appear with an option at the top which says create patterns. you can then choose if you want to make an alpha or normal pattern. i recommend making an alpha first using the "draw alpha" feature. also before submitting the pattern make sure you read the review guidelines!

you're gonna be better off doing it on the computer, it's easiest to type out the code for normals, and for alphas its easier to click the squares than any other device. you can only make patterns on the website tho, the app doesn't allow you to make patterns.

depending on what kind of pattern your making, it's fairly simple once you get the hang of it! First you'll want to hover over your name and icon in the corner and click "create patterns" and from there you can choose your type

For normals: you have to sorta code the info to get the result you want.

where it says Colors order: that's the order of your string. Each letter represents a new colored string, and it goes in alphabetical order(A= first color, b=second, etc.) so if you look at an already made pattern, you'll notice that the beginning of the bracelet starts off with lettered string, and the position of each string will make or break how the knots lay.

Colors used: that's the different colors of your string. this goes in order as well, so the first color is color A, second color in the line is string b, etc.

The knot's is what everyone struggles with. There are different abbreviations for the different types of knots, so f=forward knot, b= backward knot, fb= forward backward, bf=backward forward, 0= no knot(ignore this until you get the hang of making designs)

the letters tell what kind of knot you're gonna make, so the code f,f,f,f would be the first row to a candy stripe. You take two strings together to make a forward knot, and so forth. if you were to type f,f,b,b that would make a chevron, because of the way the knot's make the string lay.

the more knot's you have, the more strings you're gonna have. You can only add strings by typing in knots. If you try to put in the "Color's order" spot more strings and hit save, the website will only recognize the fact that there are knots, so it'll delete any added strings that don't have knot's

Look at other's patterns to get an idea of how the knot's make the bracelet change, and messa round with this!!! If you need to, open two tabs and split the screen so you have your design on one side of the screen and the forum on another. make sure you ath out for the warnings at the top of the screen, they'll guide you as you go along and tell you what is acceptable and what isn't for the website

for an alpha, it's a lot easier to make, but can be just as confusing with all the options available. something you'll notice that's different is the top bar. above the general warnings you get you have options you can click!

the alpha tab is the tab you open up to. this is the only tab you can save on. This is where you put in the keywords for your design and make sure you arent screwing up anything, and that the warnings are all gone 🙂 you can code here just like you would on a normal, but you really dont have to lol

the next one over that says "draw alpha" allows you to draw out your design!! This is the most common tool used to make alphas. you can choose the dimensions, colors, all of that in this tab. it's pretty self explanatory, but PLEASE SAVE!!!! it doesn't save itself, so if you get done with your design and go back to the alpha page, the work you just did will be gone and you'll be left with the same design you had before you started. test out the buttons and tools before you start on a design so you get a good feel for what you're dealing with.

write alpha: I never use this so I don't know a lot about it. It's not something may use. this as well seems to be self explanatory, but I have no idea how to work it lol usually written stuff doesn't get accepted unless it has a lot going on with it.

alpha from image allows you to put an image into the generator and it will create the design for you!! this thing bugs tho, it's very hard sometimes to make something out of this. this as well is self explanatory, so go ahead and mess with this too!!

Alpha from font takes a font you have on your device and allows you to do pretty much the same thing as the "write font" tab. type in what you want to be written, save, bada boom!!

When submitting a design, there is a big possibility that it will get declined by a moderator. They will always leave you directions to change up your design and tell you how to make it better!! so not only do you have to follow the guides the warnings give you, you also have to listen to what the mods tell you. don't worry, everyone wants you to be able to post your pattern, sometimes people need a slight push to make the design right for the website!

If you have any questions, please ask!!! I know I went over a lot, but there's a bunch of thing's that I didn't mention that you could have questions about. My dms are always open, or you can just type your question here 🙂 I hope this helps!!

mods that are very nice and help out a lot are @halokiwi and @KrazyKnotz, every time I've had any issue they've been very nice!! so if you're not comfortable going to me you should definitely go to one of them 😊

Here are my two tutorials for Normal patterns:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HolYORv9P8E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_2uZ1RQ5Jc

For Normal patterns: I recommend starting with a 12 string pattern when learning to make a Normal pattern because there are enough strings that you can actually see a design, but not too many strings that make it hard for beginners. You can make the pattern easier by using less colors.

I always start with a basic/simple base pattern like:
#26192
#2146
#1516
#18
#1673

I then add things like diamonds/zigzag/lines/dots/squares, and play around with the different elements by adding/taking away things. I look at patterns that already exist and see how these elements are made. I recommend saving your base pattern as a couple patterns, so if you don’t like how your pattern looks, you don’t lose all your work, you can just go to your other patterns and start again.

Make sure to pay attention to the top of the screen where there are warnings. I usually don’t worry if it saying the top strings don’t match the bottom strings until I’m done with my pattern.

The easiest way to make the strings match is to copy the pattern’s code and paste it under itself, save and preview. If the strings still don’t match, just repeat this step again, and so on.

I also recommend making some of these basic patterns that you want to use for your patterns, because it really helps you learn and visualize how the knot structure works, and making designing easier.
