So plenty of times I've made alphas or normal bracelets and a quarter of the time I run out of string or base strings ! And it's so frustrating because I'd be so close to finishing. And I know with alphas you can just replace the tying string but that gets annoying after a while, I also don't like it when I'm finished with something and I have like 3 feet of string that I could use for something else, I also don't like to use the whole skein because it will get knotted or whatever. So does someone have any tips or benchmarks I can refer to ? I know I'm a bit picky but please help!

For alphas, I make the base strings about 2 1/2 to 3 times the length they need to be to wrap around my wrist, generally about 18 inches. There's always some left over, but I'd rather waste a bit of string than risk running out. For 2-color alphas, you'll obviously need longer base strings, since you'll be tying knots with them. Hope that helps!

i have a small wrist too. to have a few cm/inches to braid (for example) the ends in to have something to close it later and have enough to knot your pattern i use something between 100/120 cm up to 150cm per string i need. but it also depends on your pattern how much a sertain color is used in it. if for example in a green, yellow and red colored pattern the most used amount of color is green make sure your green strings are a bit longer than the others. and you'll be good to go.most of the time i went well with about 120cm for eache string starting to knot my pattern at about 10 to 12cm of my strings to have something to braid together to tight the bracelet around my wrist later. |

edit @ CKT2003: I know it's pretty hard to meassure without have a bunch of left-over yarn but better have a bit leftover than running out. so no worries if you made some more practise you'll learn pretty fast how long your strings should be for you to have less leftovers.
