Hi, I'm going to make a keychain (keycharm?) out of #65482 and I have some questions. Mashaknots and Kinsey b tutorials were wonderful but not super specific for people like me who need very specific instructions.

1. Even though it says 13 strings I just put 12 as base strings and the 13th string is the one you use for knotting?

2. Which color switch method do I use? I read the tutorial: https://www.braceletbook.com/tutorials/106_how-to-make-color-switches-in-an-alpha/ but again since I've never done this before, do I use flat alpha method or regular?

Thank you 🙈

Hi!
1. So yes u only attach 12 base strings (6 strings folded in half) onto the keychain. Tape the background color to the side and start knotting with that. (It’ll be ur 13th string)
2. Since this is ur first alpha I suggest the regular method just so it isn’t any harder than it needs to be. Once u do a certain amount of alphas and are comfortable, then I suggest u try out the flat alpha technique.

I'd personally recommend the flat alpha technique. I believe that you can learn to do it as a beginner too and it has much nicer results.

hi! sorry if i'm a few days late and you have already made it but here are some tips.

1. i think the flat alpha technique will work better and masha knots shows you how to do that in a very in depth video. (i think it's the one you linked)
2. when the pattern says 13 strings that is the number of base strings and the leading string which would be your background color. when you add in other colors throughout the bracelet, you will have more strings at the end but you only knot on the base strings.
3. i recommend when you're learning to do alphas that you make the base strings and background color different. when you get better at them, you can make them the same color if you prefer. i personally just think it's easier for beginners because that way you won't accidentally use base strings as leading strings if that make sense.
4. another way to find the number of base strings needed is to simply just count the squares on the grid.
5. if you are using a printed out pattern, cross the rows off with a pencil as you go. this just helps so that you don't skip a row, repeat a row, or just so you don't get confused.
hopefully these tips help you and good luck! alphas are super fun to make.

@danielle_3 thank you very much! I actually did finish it, but I'll use some of your advice for the next one.

If a pattern says 14 strings, it means 13 base strings and one leading string.

If a pattern says 21 strings, it means 20 base strings and one leading string.

Looks at your specific pattern and subtract one from the string amount. That's the amount of base strings you'll need.
