What is the difference with an alpha pattern versus a normal pattern?

With normal, you use a tie sheet chart an you tie with all the strings and the strings will swap places and move. With alpha you use a grid pattern and you have background strings that will not move and will not be showing. You have one main string traveling across the pattern while the background strings just give the main string something to tie on to. I hope that makes sense. There's probably a better way to explain it but I can't think of one at the moment.

@Robin99 that was pretty good. You covered a lot of it. Another major difference is that normals use diagonal knots, while alphas use horizontal knots. Take the chevron normal and a simple text alpha, for example. The chevron is made up of diagonal lines, while the alpha's made up of horizontal lines.

If ur a beginner you should start with normal and work ur up to doing alpha. Once u understand normal it makes alpha easier, but that's for me. Everyone is different
