The ranks will advance based on your involvement. The more involved you are throughout BB and the more you contribute the higher your rank gets! I would say be active in forums, make other people's patterns, create your own patterns, and definitely rate patterns!

Just how active you are! Adding to-dos, sending friend requests, rating patterns, making variations, making patterns, posting photos, posting videos, post in the forum, making tutorials, and commenting on patterns. I'm pretty sure there are other things you can do but here is all I know.
