If I add in a color at the edge of an alpha will the string stick out on the side?

Yes don’t do a flat alpha colour switch on the edges and don’t add in string on the edges at all it won’t look too good

@2006_Mandy I'm trying to do pattern #58479. Do you know how I could add the red in without making the string stick out?

If you must add in a new string on the edge, just knot it on normally, without using the flat alpha technique. Depending on how you add new strings in, you may or may not have a little tail of string sticking out. If this is the case, include the little tail with your base string and knot on both for a few rows, then you can cut it off.

Cutting off a string which you added in on the edge doesn’t look to good but that is my personal preference. If possible you could try making the base string on the edge red and switch the old leading string with the red bass string when you need to add in the red for the first time on a edge.

Or put the red through one of your knots like you would if you were colour switching and the red string is an old base string. Tape it behind the keychain or bracelet then put it through one of your knots before you need to add the red in.

In general I'd recommend the straight edges technique (bf knots on the left edge and fb knots on the right edge). That way when you add a new string at the edge the end will always point towards the inside and not to the outside.

(I know you already figured it out but in case someone was wondering the same thing)
