What are those coloured lines on the side??

I am making a bracelet for my son and niece. And I found a pattern I like but in the top and bottom, it has a small coloured line and a letter on it. This is at the top, bottom and sometimes middle. What does it mean? It's on every pattern...Thanks for your help. |

they show the order of the strings when you start and end your bracelet, you might not always start with a flat start and will cut the pattern however the letters distinguish the different colours and they are used when users are creating the patterns.

is it an alpha or normal pattern? from what I understand, the lines represent different colored strings in the order that they start/end in the bracelet, and in alpha patterns, you might see one on the side to indicate a new color. hope this helps : )
