Hi! I don't know how well I can explain things for you, but I can try!

The two main parts of an alpha are your base strings and your leading strings. Base strings are the strings that you make knots onto. A leading string is the string that is actually making the knot. The number of base strings depends on the dimensions of the pattern and the number of leading strings depends on the number of colors in the pattern.

Let's take #55287 for example. To figure out the number of base strings, you can either look at the dimensions at the top of the page to the right the pattern number, or you can count the white strings that are poking out the top of the pattern. For this pattern, you would need to cut 11 base strings. Because you won't be making any knots with these strings, just cut enough thread for the string to be able to wrap around your wrist and have ties. (*note: where it says "strings" to the right of dimensions, that number it 12, not 11. The reason why is because the leading string counts as one of them.)

For the leading string, you have to look at the actual colors of the pattern to determine what it is. If you look on the edges of the pattern, you'll see different colored strings poking out the edges with letters on them. These represent your leading string and whenever you need to bring a new color in.

* To begin knotting, you need to start on row one. The arrows pointing right are forward knots, and the arrows going left are backward knots. In this pattern, you will start the first row with just forward knots onto each of the base strings of the tan color.
* Then in the second row, you will make backward knots only onto the first five base strings. After you have done that, you will need to insert a new color. You can tell because on the side of the pattern in row two, it has a little orange line peeking out and the color of the next knot you need to make also changes color from tan to orange.
* Put your tan string back and behind your bracelet, and tape the orange string to your surface behind your bracelet and begin to make backward knots with it.
* Then the last two knots in this row you will need to make with your tan string. Put the orange string back and behind your bracelet and grab your tan string and make a backward knot with it onto the next base string. Once you make those two final knots, you are done with row two!
* Keep reading your pattern in this same way. Row three starts with one tan knot, then six orange knots, and then four tan knots. All you have to do is change your different colored leading strings depending on what color knot you need to make. Also make sure that you are knotting onto your base strings in order. This process is repeated throughout the bracelet and it should become easier as you go along.

If you still don't understand, I'd recommend rewatching Masha Knots' video and maybe watching some other YouTubers' alpha videos. Masha Knots also has a few videos of her knotting alphas in real time, so that might help you to figure out how they work.

Anyway, I don't know if my rambling made any sense, but if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them! Alphas can be tricky, but like I mentioned, I think it is easier to learn by watching than reading something, so definitely watch videos and hopefully you'll understand!

@ava_maddie I think practice is the only solution to that. The more comfortable you get with alphas, the better you'll get at them 🙂

@ava_maddie but as for your alphas not being flat, make sure you aren't pulling on the strings too hard in your color switches. For your base string problem, you could also try tying your knots tighter.

@calamari33 I would recommend any pattern that you want to make with only a few colors. My first alpha was the vertical wave, and I'd recommend doing that one first so you get used to alphas. Then I'd make one with 2-4 colors in it. Some patterns that you could make are #38672, #9187, or #57277, but you can definitely choose any pattern you want! The more alphas you make, the more advanced patterns you should be able to try!

Sometimes I do triangle ends as a start, but sometimes I just start in a straight line. I mostly use tape or a clipboard when I make alphas.

I have a tutorial on my YouTube channel on how to make alpha bracelets! I also learned form MashaKnots and she has a 30 minute in depth video on alphas that's super helpful too (:
