Have you watched Masha Knots updated tutorial on alphas? I could not figure out alphas for so long, but after watching Masha Knots tutorial, I finally understood it.

So I'm going to try to sum this up. When the arrows point right, that means to do forward knots. When the arrows point left, that means do backward knots. On the knots on the end on the left, do backward-forward knots. The knots on the end on the right, do forward-backward knots. These past two things are for straight edges. Color changing is a little difficult to explain since it's a little complicated, especially if you want to do the flat alpha technique. I recommend watching Masha Knots tutorial on flat alphas to understand it better. I hope this helps a little bit.
